  • The Vacation of Your Dreams is Not Out of Reach

    February 2, 2016

As winter begins winding down, many people find their attention turning towards one thing: vacation. However, before you decide that you will have to save that vacation of your dreams for another year, why not look at other options for paying for the trip? One way you can do this is quite simple—all you need to do is look in your jewelry box.

    What Do You Have?

First, it’s important to realize that you may have more available to you in sellable old jewelry than you thought. Not only can you make money on the obvious things like gold and silver, loose diamonds and old engagement rings, but many other pieces are desirable too. Popular brands like Tiffany, Cartier and Van Cleef have a high value on the resale market. Both modern pieces and vintage designs can fetch a premium. Additionally, premium watches are good for resale and may have a higher value than you suspect.

    Preparing for Sale

First, make sure your jewelry is in good condition. Does it need to be cleaned or polished? Use the proper tools and equipment to ensure you do not damage your pieces. Better yet, take them to a professional to have them looking just as good as new. If any repairs need to be done, balance the cost of having the repairs done with the value it will add to the price.

    Settling on a Price

The last thing you want to do is to underprice your jewelry piece or pieces, especially if you are selling to another individual. However, if you try to sell your jewels for too much, it could be difficult to make the sale. Having an appraisal done is one option and can give you confidence as you enter the sale.

    Working with a Jeweler

For many people, a better solution than trying to sell your item yourself is to work with a jewelry store that specializes in vintage or used pieces. You will sell to them directly and will not have to go to the trouble of selling it yourself. Not only do you not have to worry about dealing with an unscrupulous buyer, but also the ease of the sale will free up your time to start planning that trip this summer!
