  • Why Upgrading Your Engagement Ring is a Smart Choice

    May 4, 2016

Nearly every woman would love a big, sparkling diamond engagement ring. However, sometimes finances dictate that a smaller ring is the smarter choice when the spouse-to-be proposes. While it used to be that the engagement ring was thought of as a lifetime piece of jewelry, today the rules of etiquette have relaxed a bit, and many couples are finding that trading up is a good choice. Why? Consider these four reasons.

    Spend Less Upfront

When a couple is first getting married and starting out, there are many significant expenses such as buying a home and paying for a wedding. Later, there may be more cash available to spend on a ring. Just pay a small sum now to have something to wear, with the knowledge that the trade up will happen.

    Styles Change

While a classic ring will always be in style, some trends come and go. Why be stuck with a ring that screams “10 years ago?” Consider updating your engagement ring or set to something more modern or a classic piece. You’ll feel more confident and appreciate how it looks with your other jewelry.

You Can Sell Your Old Set

You aren’t stuck with that old engagement set languishing away in a jewelry box somewhere. It is often possible for you to sell your engagement ring to use as a down payment towards a newer, larger engagement ring. This can be an excellent choice if you are planning to spend more, so you can decrease your out of pocket cost.

    Everybody’s Doing It

Years ago, it may have been odd to trade or sell your old ring. Today, it’s quite common. Ask around; you are sure to find that many friends and family members have done the same thing. You’re not alone.

Jewelry Stores are on to the Trend

Many stores are recognizing that this is a real thing. This means that it may be easier to find “starter” sets or find jewelry stores to sell or trade your set in on a new piece. While this is a good thing, it does mean that you need to be willing to do a bit of research before you decide to go with a particular jeweler.

As you can see, trading in your old engagement ring towards a newer, larger piece can be an excellent choice. However, it is important that if you decide to do this that you work with a company that understands your needs and will assure that you get the best price for your old piece. Roy Herlz Jewelers is a New York jewelry store specializing in high-end and estate pieces. We would love to help you decide on the best option for your engagement ring too.
