  • Turning Your Treasures into Instant Cash: One Woman’s Story

    July 10, 2015

While diamonds are the bedrock (no pun intended here) of Roy Herzl, Inc., we purchase a fair amount of antique and vintage jewelry for the secondary market. We are very plugged into a vast network of dealers and private collectors, so we know that we can give your treasured jewels a caring second home.  As they say with rescued pets, we find the next forever-home for your jewelry with someone who will appreciate and pamper your precious jewelry as you did.

No piece is too insignificant for us to review; we will happily look at anything you bring us to inspect. It does not need to have a fancy provenance—from a well-known maker, such as Cartier, Tiffany, Bulgari, or Van Cleef & Arpels.  It can be great-grandma’s no-name emerald earrings or your second cousin’s cache of jewelry left to you in her will, a veritable jumble of “stuff” that you are not even sure has any value.

We will give you a fair and honest reckoning of what you have and what we feel you can turn into cash.  We are certain that our prices are the best in this specialized area.  We always tell prospective sellers to do their homework, shop the marketplace, visit our competitors, and then come back to us with the best offer tendered, and we will aim to best it.
We recently did just that with a woman who came to us with a very beautiful family heirloom diamond ring. She had loved the ring for years, but she and her husband felt it was time to turn it into bankable cash. The ring featured a central stone, just a hair under four carats, with pavé-set diamonds in the mounting and on the band.  The stone, of course, was the centerpiece. It was an older, emerald-cut diamond, a type of stone we love, and in general, one that is valued by dealers in antique jewelry. The style of this kind of cut has a special scintillation to it, different from the gleam and sparkle of today’s precision-cut stones; we feel that these vintage stones “speak,” reflecting the hand of the individual cutter, who has left a bit of himself in the cut.

This potential client was very astute and had already done a good bit of research.  She left us and was going to do some more shopping around, but took to heart our offer to return to us, to give us an opportunity to outbid her highest offer.  She did come back, and as promised, we made her a better offer, assuring her we knew we could sell her piece to someone who would cherish it.  And, since we could see she was still a bit hesitant to part with something that her husband’s grandfather had bought, in an effort to make the sale less difficult, we offered to make a replica of her ring, with a white topaz, instead of that four-carat diamond.

And we did just that.  It was the deal-cincher that made that sale easier for her.  And after we made that ring, we didn’t quite like the look of it, so we reset the mounting with a cubic zirconia, and it was just perfect.  Only she will know it’s not the ring that grandpa bought.  As she later said to us, paying us the highest compliment, “You were so nice, so caring, so generous with your time…and the idea to make a ring for me was the icing on the cake.  Even after our sale, you wanted to make me happy and that meant a great deal to me.”

At Roy Herzl, we do, indeed, want to make you happy…we want you to be satisfied that the sale you made is the best possible one, and that your piece will live on in someone else’s jewelry box, with love and attention.

Come see us.  We know you will not be disappointed.

We are interested in all kinds of precious jewelry, particularly diamonds of a carat or more. Please do not hesitate to contact us to make an appointment.
