  • Repurposing Engagement Rings

    December 3, 2015

Perhaps your engagement was called off, or maybe you’ve replaced a “starter” engagement ring with one that has a bit more sparkle and shine. No matter what the reason for retiring an engagement ring, it can be a challenge to decide what to do with an unused diamond. Check out these five ideas for reusing, repurposing or recycling your ring.

    Reuse the Stones

If you decided to upgrade your ring to something larger and flashier, your old ring probably has sentimental value. Why not have the stones remade into a pendant or brooch? This way you can wear the piece and keep it near your heart for years to come. There are many excellent designs online if this is something that interests you, or a jewelry designer can help you find something unique.

    Pass it On

Another option is to give the ring to a child. If the ring is from a marriage that failed, this could be an ethical choice—since the ring will have more value to your child (when he or she comes of age) than it does to you. Consider this as a gift when your son or daughter hits a milestone age or graduates.

Wear it on the Right Hand

Many engagement rings make an excellent addition to your ring wardrobe when worn in a non-traditional manner. Consider having the ring re-sized so you can wear it on a pinkie or middle finger to break the stigma of the ring being an “engagement ring.”

    Sell it

In some cases, it may be best to let the ring go. Working with a jewelry buyer will allow you to get a good return on the piece and move on with the knowledge that the ring is going to someone who can appreciate it.

    Trade it

Another option is to trade in your current engagement ring on one that you will truly love. Trading is something that many couples plan to do from the beginning. They purchase a “starter set” and then when finances are a bit better they will trade it in towards an expensive diamond.

If you decide that selling or trading is the way to go, make sure you work with a reputable jewelry buyer. Roy Herlz is the jewelry buyer NY residents trust for engagement rings, watches, loose diamonds and other items too. Call us with any questions or just bring your ring to our store and let one of our experts appraise your stone. We want you to get the best price possible for your ring!
