  • The Four C’s of Diamonds

Well-known to many, the four Cs of diamonds refer to color, clarity, cut, and carat. They are the most important distinctions in understanding these precious stones.

  • Color

Diamonds come in all colors of the rainbow, but they are divided into two categories: white diamonds and fancy color diamonds. In the former category, the standard rating system assesses a diamond’s place in the color range on a scale of D to Z, with D meaning totally colorless all the way to Z, a pale yellow or brown. Among fancy color diamonds, shades of blue, pink, and yellow are the most sought-after.

  • Clarity

Many diamonds contain inclusions, or inner flaws. The visibility, size and number of these inclusions determine its clarity. The Gemological Society of America’s rating system for clarity grades diamonds on a scale from Flawless (no flaws visible under 10x magnification) to Included (flaws visible to the naked eye).

  • Cut

Perhaps the most complicated term to grasp, cut is often misunderstood to mean a diamond’s shape (round, oval, marquise, etc.), but it actually refers to the diamond’s reflective qualities. A good cut gives a diamond its brilliance, and the best cut diamonds follow complex, mathematical formulas designed to maximize brilliance. The art of cutting a diamond is not about choosing which shape best suits the stone, but rather which complex formula can produce the most brilliance. Cuts determine the shape of the diamond, not the other way around.

  • Carat

Used for both diamonds and precious stones, a carat is a measure of weight equaling .20 grams. As large diamonds are much rarer than small diamonds, their price often rises exponentially with size.

There are many diamond shapes, but some of the more popular include:
