How To Clean Your Diamond – A Brief Guide

Just like any other type of jewelry, diamonds get dirty. Even if you take off your diamond ring, watch or necklace when you are doing heavy work or exercising, your sweat and natural oils will cause your diamonds to lose their luster after awhile. While you could take your favorite jewelry to a trained jeweler for cleaning, sometimes that is not always convenient. We’ve put together a brief guide to help you clean this precious stone—so you can keep your favorite jewelry looking its very best.

    Soak in Warm Water

For light dust and dirt, soaking in warm water can make all the difference. However, make sure you plug the drain well, so you don’t accidentally lose your piece.

    Don’t Use Harsh Chemicals

Avoid using harsh chemicals (like all-purpose cleaners). These can be very damaging to diamonds. Use a cleaner made specifically for diamonds or just use a mild dishwashing soap and warm water.

Use a Soft Brush or Cloth

A soft toothbrush or dishcloth is the perfect tool for cleaning your diamond. You don’t need a heavy, harsh tool. Even though your diamond is hard, there is no need to risk damaging the prongs holding it in place, for instance.

    Use Caution with Machines

There are many “jewelry cleaning devices” on the market today. These may or may not be safe to use on your most precious pieces. Use caution when deciding whether or not to use one of these devices.

    Consider the Metal

While you are cleaning your gemstone, make sure you don’t use a cleaner that could damage the gold, silver or other metal in which it is set. While most jewelry cleaners will be fine, read the fine print to make sure you don’t make a mistake.

    Schedule a Checkup

Having the ability to clean your own jewelry is a very good thing. However, that doesn’t take the place of having it professionally cleaned and inspected. A professional may be able to catch problems with the piece and recommend repairs before the problem becomes too bad to fix. A trained jeweler will also get your piece sparkly and shiny in a way that you may not be able to do.

Now, you have skills to get your favorite diamond ring clean and sparkling again. But, what should you do with a piece that isn’t your favorite? Why not bring it by Roy Herlz Jewelers?
